Why You Need To Start Using Retinol Now.
Admittedly, I’m an anti-aging product junkie … but “retinol” always overwhelmed me.
& did you know that “retinol” is the most searched skin care ingredient on Google?I guess you could say that the quest for perfect skin is kind of a sport for me. I love a regular hydrafacial, I’ve braved a few rounds of microneedling, & I have a small fortune of face masks, eye creams, serums & moisturizers claiming to be the fountain of youth. Despite all of that, figuring out retinol has been a whole different ball game.
When my esthetician started boasting about the ingredient can help treat acne, brighten skin tone, & reverse the signs of aging, I knew I needed to add it to my regular skincare routine.
Why I started using “retinol”:
I have oily skin. I’m often told that this is a good thing because I’ll “age so much slower!” However, since turning 30 … ahem, 5 years ago … I’ve noticed my skin (amongst other things, but I digress!) changing. Texture, tone, even fine lines around my eyes, that make me want to cry … also, because of my oily skin, I’ve always struggled with blackheads & the occasional breakout. Which is exactly why my esthetician recommended adding retinol to my regimen.
When she told me about retinol’s ability to improve skin tone, boost collagen, reduce fine lines & wrinkles, & speed up cell turnover … well, these words were music to my ears!
OK, so what is “retinol”?
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative added to topical skincare products to promote skin renewal, reduce acne & boost your skin’s collagen production. It also functions like an antioxidant to help address free-radical damage, which leads to visible signs of aging. Totally worth checking out … because of their proven results!
How & when I use “retinol”:
Retinoids break down in sunlight & make your skin a lot more sensitive, meaning: this is a product to use at night. &, you should definitely wear SPF during the day. After removing your makeup & cleansing your skin, apply a pea-sized amount of retinol to your face & neck. Yes, a little bit goes a long way!
Because I was super excited about this dream drug, I immediately added it to my nightly routine – every single night. Bad idea, & I found this out the hard way. Overuse of retinol can cause flaking, redness & burning. I should have followed my esthetician’s advice, which is why I’m sharing it with you: introduce retinol slowly into your skincare regimen (not every night!) & start off with a low percentage! Try twice a week, nightly & slowly increase the usage – giving your skin a chance to acclimate & build up endurance.
