What Is Self Care & Why Is It Important?

“Self Care” is such a popular topic of conversation lately… but, what is it really & why is it important?

For me, self care is making a conscious effort to do a little something every day that is solely for me. Whether it’s putting down my laptop & picking up a novel for a few minutes, pampering myself at home, or heading to the dog park with Osman for a walk & time outside. Here are a few ways I like to practice self care…

Working out.

The number one thing I do strictly for myself… & I love it. First thing in the morning, before I have the opportunity to muddle my mind with all the distractions of the day, I dedicate an hour to focusing on physically pushing my body to its limits. I enjoy the challenge of seeing what the heck I am made of! I train with a personal trainer in a small group setting, because I find that being told what to do helps me to turn my brain off of “overdrive” & I work harder when someone is coaching me to stay focused & be present.

Reading.

I regularly have a self-help/development book in the works… but the way I read non-fiction ends up being a lot like research & studying, so I don’t consider this to be “self care.” Instead, I turn to a little fiction to escape the daily grind & invest in myself. When I need to take a break & take some time for myself, I love immersing myself in a good book – that’s not too heavy. Something I can easily enjoy!

At-Home Spa Day.

Also known as “Self Care Sunday.” I usually do a facial before jumping in the bath for a long, hot soak or enjoying a steamy shower. I’m obsessed with this one from Raffaele Ruberto SKIN. I also regularly apply a hair mask, like this one by Olaplex, to soak for a few hours or even overnight.

Yoga & Meditation.

Playing a completely different role (to me) than my regular gym routine, I have recently taken up practicing yoga on a more regular basis & trying to meditate daily. I’m still so new, I literally have to set reminders on my phone that say “Meditate”… but I’ve enjoyed using apps like Calm & Headspace. I figure, there’s gotta be a reason why the most successful people in the world have all taken up a regular meditation routine… & I’m nothing if not open to growth opportunities in the name of success.

Other Ideas to Participate in Self-Care:

Journaling. Something I swear I’ll get into the habit of doing one of these days… I love the idea of taking time every morning to connect with myself in this way, to write down my thoughts & positive affirmations.

 

Get outside. Going for a walk, typically with Osman, & getting a little fresh air is another one of my favorite ways to take care of myself.

 

Binge watch a favorite show. D. & I both have shows that we love, that the other isn’t so much “into.” With him traveling as much as he does, I find that I actually look forward to nights spent solo in bed, because it means I can binge on my favorite shows, without worrying about him hating them!

 

Make a vision board (mine tend to live on Pinterest!) that contains favorite quotes, pictures I love, places I want to visit, things I want to make etc. I enjoy going back & scrolling through what I’ve pinned when I’m feeling overwhelmed in life, or in need of some inspiration.

Why is self care so important?

Self care produces positive feelings, which improves confidence & self-esteem. Self-care is important for your family & friends to witness in you, too. They learn from you, so setting functional boundaries to take care of yourself shows them that they too need to put themselves first & not overextend or overwork.
