Everything You Need to Know About My Recent Liver Cleanse.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’re already aware of my recent 7 day (ok, accidentally 9 day) liver cleanse…

& since completing, I’ve gotten lots of questions about the what’s, the why’s & the how’s of what I did. Here’s everything you need to know, including the nitty-gritty & TMI details, of my liver cleanse:

 

 

 

the WHY.

One of the most frequently asked questions has been “WHY a liver cleanse?!” & the short answer is: 2020.

We’ve been through the ringer this year, right? A global pandemic, lots of cancelled travel, even more time spent stuck at home, a business that is all but shuttered indefinitely, a cancer diagnosis in our beloved cat, the unexpected loss of my grandmother, a freak natural disaster … all of this to say: I have drank too much & eaten too little healthy food, which has left me feeling YUCK.

In addition, I’ve had a few non-serious but unexplained weird health things creep up on me & I generally try to take pretty dang good care of myself in the name of keeping healthy, so I don’t have to treat the sickness. Weight gain, lack of energy, non-existent libido, ridiculously high histamine levels leading to internal itching that drove me to the ER, heightened anxiety & added mild depression, complete lack of focus & a serious struggle to find my normal sense of drive … after returning from a week in Florida & indulging without hesitation, it seemed the perfect time to hit “reset” on my system & see what getting back on track might do.

Fun Fact: the liver is the main organ used to clear out toxins. If the liver is not functioning properly, every other system in the body, including the heart, kidneys, brain & skin, is compromised!

After two days of attempting to survive by juicing all the liver-cleansing fruits & vegetables I could get my hands on, I found myself feeling incredibly weak, nauseous & all-around sickly. Chances are I was purging toxins in my body, but I knew that my method was unsustainable. So I turned to the expert, my favorite chiro on the planet: Dr. CJ Kleene of Back in Line (for my local followers, I *highly* suggest getting on her calendar – even if it’s just a simple adjustment!). Dr. CJ set me up with a 7-day proven, & healthier, approach to cleansing my liver … & honestly, it wasn’t that hard to stick to.

the HOW.

So, after picking up the supplements recommended by Dr. CJ, here’s exactly what my daily food/beverage intake looked like for the next 7 days:

First, the CAN’T HAVE – MUST AVOID AT ALL COSTS list:
– no coffee
– no alcohol
– no gluten
– no dairy
– no eggs
– no sugar
– no corn
(surprisingly much more difficult than I initially thought it would be!)

 

– DAYs ONE & TWO –
upon waking:
– 16 oz. lemon water on an empty stomach (1/2 lemon, juiced + cold water)
– 24 oz. celery juice (1 bunch of celery + 1/2 Granny Smith apple, juiced)
*wait 30 minutes between lemon water & celery juice, & another 30 minutes after celery juice before eating/drinking anything else

for breakfast:
– Well Labs Daily Detox II shake (2 scoops + 8-10oz oat milk)
– 2 Well Labs Foundation Multi vitamins

for lunch:
– spinach salad, loaded up with aaallllll the extra veggies! (shredded cabbage & carrots, crumbled cauliflower & snow peas) with a balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing

for dinner:
– Well Labs Daily Detox II shake (2 scoops + 8-10oz oat milk)
– 2 Well Labs Foundation Multi vitamins

for snacks:
– hummus & veggies

how I felt:
Once I was set up with the Well Labs Detox program, I felt much more confident in completing the lease & not doing more harm than good to my body. The shakes are a little chalky … but I’ve taken enough protein shakes in my time to kind of expect this & could tolerate it. *TIP: add ice, it’s easier to chug the shake when it’s cold!

On Day Two I had a pretty significant headache all day & I noticed my mood was pretty dark. I even scheduled a call with my therapist to hash out these feelings & emotions. It’s unreal the way the body stores stress … & the impact it can take on your overall health!

 

– DAYs THREE through SEVEN –
upon waking:

– a LOT of salads, packed with fruits & veggies, & balsamic vinaigrette
– spaghetti squash + organic marinara + organic ground turkey
– tacos in a bowl (shredded greens + organic ground turkey + fresh salsa)
– steamed cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onion + organic ground turkey
– air-fried buffalo chicken wings with celery & carrots

for side dishes:
– steamed broccoli, cauliflower & asparagus … with almost every meal!

for snacks:
– hummus & veggies (usually carrots & celery)

how I felt:
Days three & four I had *tons* of energy – the shakes were filling, which staved off the hangry!
Days five, six & seven … (this is the TMI I referred to) the gas set in, in a very real way! As did the number two’s … which was actually really satisfying, as it made me feel like all of this effort was paying off – my body was clearly purging toxins like crazy!

The weekend hit on days four & five, & it was definitely a challenge to not have cocktails while watching football with friends or wine around the bonfire at night … but I stayed strong & was proud of myself for it!

Days six & seven, with the light getting brighter & brighter at the end of the tunnel, it was more difficult to choke down the shakes … I was so sick of them, I skipped the 2nd one on Day Six & just went hungry instead!

& now that I’m finished …

I find myself paying much closer attention to what I put in my body. I’m still making the effort to eat super clean & avoiding gluten, have not had any coffee & am instead still drinking the detox tea. I’ve set a rule for myself that, except for the rare special occasion, I only drink alcohol on the weekends & I’m *severely* limiting my dairy intake.

I never weighed myself going into this cleanse, & I haven’t put on real pants since completing it … so I’m not sure if I shed a few pounds or not, but I feel lighter on my feet! lol!

In a few weeks I have an appointment with a functional meds doctor to have my hormone levels checked, along with my other enzymes & … whatever else one checks when having a full panel of tests run! I will be interested to compare these test results with the ones I received in May of 2019 – when a liver cleanse was originally recommended to me. Stay tuned for what I find out!
